You can now purchase a physical copy of Windows 11

Windows 11 has been out for over half a year now, but if you wanted to buy a physical copy of the OS, now is the time to do so. So far, the only way to get Windows 11 has been to upgrade your Windows 10 computer or buy a new computer with Windows 11 installed out of the box. However, it has recently been noticed that you can now purchase a physical copy of Windows 11 Home or Pro for yourself.

Retail copies were first spotted by Twitter user Luke Blevins (via OnMSFT) over the weekend, but may have been available a little longer than that. The best product purchase lists show that they are available for the first time on April 14, approximately six months after the official launch. Yet, since Microsoft never announced that physical copies were available for purchase, many probably didn’t even realize it.

Of course, buying a physical copy at first glance doesn’t have much of a purpose. Most laptops already come with Windows 11 anyway, and if they come with Windows 10, you can upgrade it yourself. You can also purchase a license online. But the physical copy gives you a USB flash drive that you can use as installation media right out of the box. Sure, you can use any flash drive to install Windows 11, but that makes the process easier if, for example, you’re setting up a brand new computer that you just made. Plus, you get a nice little box if you like collecting things like this. The box itself clearly displays the background of Windows 11 Bloom and uses a light theme for Windows 11 Home or a dark theme for Windows 11 Pro, which makes the packaging more attractive than Windows 10.

Just like a digital license, a physical copy of Windows 11 Home costs $ 139.99, while Windows 11 Pro costs $ 199.99, so you don’t pay extra for the physical edition. The license is valid for one computer. Keep in mind that your computer will still need to meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11 if you want to have a smooth experience with it.
