What to look out for in WPIAL Sports May 10, 2022: Last few places in the playoffs

Tuesday, May 10, 2022 | 00:16

With only a few days left until the regular season, there are only a few playoff spots left before the WPIAL softball playoffs are completed.

It’s not a game of winning and playing between a few eastern rivals, but it’s pretty close.

Penn Hills hosts Plum on Tuesday.

The Indians hold a half-game advantage over the Mustangs, and both teams have seven defeats in stock.

If Penn Hills wins, he wins and Plum is eliminated.

If the Mustangs win away, they will win a place in the playoffs. Then if Plum beats Woodland Hills on Wednesday without a win, Penn Hills will be eliminated.

Two other district teams can qualify for the softball playoffs on Tuesday:

• If Norwin beats North Allegheny, the Knights will enter 10 teams in the 6A playoffs. The Tigers have already fought back.

• If Montour beats Blackhawk on Tuesday, New Castle gets a place in the Class 4A playoffs.

Bubble baseball

82 out of 83 WPIAL baseball playoffs have been decided.

The final venue will be determined on Tuesday when Blackhawk will host the 4A New Castle title defense in Division 2-4A.

The Cougars have a one-game advantage; however, visiting Red Hurricane would win and eliminate Blackhawk due to the momentum of their series this week.

New Castle stayed alive with a 6-5 win on Monday.

If New Castle wins and Ambridge (vs. Quaker Valley) and / or Central Valley (vs. Beaver) wins their games on Tuesday, there could be a triple or even a four-way tie for fourth place. But New Castle would win all direct battles in every scenario.

Serve for qualifications

The final week of the WPIAL boys ’regular volleyball season begins with a couple of teams trying to win a ticket to the upcoming district postseason.

Peters Township can win one of the two remaining places in the playoffs of Section 1-3A on Tuesday when it hosts Moon.

It will not be easy for the Indians because they are hosting a desperate team also in the play-off hunt. The Tigers tied for fourth place with Bethel Park, one game behind Peters Township with the two remaining stock games.

Moon will qualify if he wins Peters Township on Tuesday and defeats Upper St. on Thursday. Clair who is tied to the playoffs.

Bethel Park hosts the Canon-McMillan section champions on Tuesday. Like the Moon, the Black Hawks can win if they split up, and the Tigers also split their last two matches.

In Class 2A, Mars can draw a draw for fourth place and qualify for the playoffs with a home win on Tuesday against Deer Lakes.

The Lancers have already fought.

A Fightin ’Planets win means all five teams in Section 2 will qualify for the 2A postseason.
