USFL Week 4: Breakers Survive Gamblers

4th week of USFL wrapped up on Sunday with a sandy race in between Houston Gamblers and New Orleans Breakers at the Protective Stadium.

In the end, the Breakers broke out in first place, winning 23-16 despite four turnovers.

The Breakers improved to 3-1 and remained one game behind the leading Birmingham Stallions in the Southern Division (4-0). Houston dropped to 1-3.

Here are the top performances.

New Orleans Breakers 23, Houston Gamblers 16

The match started as a defensive fight and both teams struggled to move the ball. However, the Breakers took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and it wasn’t just on any old goal from the game.

Taylor Bertolet, who has just been picked up by the Breakers, punched the 50-yarder in his first attempt.

Early in the second quarter, the Breakers drove … until Beniquez Brown stopped in front of passing Kyle Slaughter for a big interception.

And here’s what the interception looked like from the perspective of the intended recipient.

That led the Gamblers to a 7-3 lead when quarterback Clayton Thorson threw a quick pass to JoJo Ward, and the elusive receiver took care of the rest.

Houston scored from the game and took a 10-3 lead, and Gambler’s defense persistently harassed Slaughter.

But as the half ended, the Breakers made a nice run, tying the score 10-10 after quarterback Jordan Ellis made his way to the end zone with 10 yards.

It was 13-10, the Gamblers at half-time, however, as Nick Vogel drilled his second goal of the game.

The Breakers equalized at 13-13 and threatened to score again as they moved the ball into their own field.

But Micah Abernathy stopped driving intercepted in the end zone. It was the fourth lost ball for New Orleans in the game.

The teams continue to hone as time gets short in the fourth quarter. But the Gamblers managed to get close enough to Vogel, who drilled a 53-yard goal and brought Houston to a 16-13 lead.

But the fight continued as Bertolet fought back with 45 yards and regained the score, 16-16.

The Breakers would return the ball within two minutes, making the most of their time, winning it when Sloter teamed up with Jonathan Adams on a 29-yard touchdown pass.
