Thirty years later Steve Martin he played the titular father in Charles Shyer The bride’s fatherWarner Bros. shared trailer for his updated look at classic rom-com. Andy Garcia starred in a remake with the legendary Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjon, Diego Bonet, Isabel Merced and SNLs Chloe Fineman.
There have been some fun updates to the film, starting with a story that now focuses on a non-white family. In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyGarcia is exploring how this will shake things up and add new momentum.
“There was both an honor and an obligation to deliver a story that is within Latin cultures, in this case, Cuban and Mexican, trying to connect with each other,” García says. “There is an obligation to do it right, to present it without stereotypes, in a way that, although culturally specific, its themes are universal.”
Second, with all the drama that comes with wedding planning, Garciin Billy and Ingrid Gloria Estefan have problems in their own marriage. After one year of attending therapy for couples (through Veep’s Matt Walsh), Ingrid is now advocating for divorce.
In the same interview with EW, Estefan says, “She presses the button – that D-word with divorce. She tries to make him wake up because a year of therapy certainly didn’t wake him up. But that decision is difficult for a Latino to make. “
Except Martin, The bride’s father (1991) starring Diane Keaton, Kieran Culkin, Martin Short and Kimberly Williams-Paisley. This version from the 90s was of course a remake itself; it was shared 40 years after the adaptation of Edward Streeter’s novel by Vincente Minnelli, and starred Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett and Elizabeth Taylor. The 1950 version of the film received several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.
The bride’s father will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on June 16th.
