Code Strange new worlds premiere event, TrekMovie spoke exclusively with newcomer Bruce Horak (Chief Engineer Hemmer), who only briefly appeared at the end of the series premiere. The actor talked about how he went through Hemmer’s brave personality, did his homework for Trek and more.
So how did you prepare for the Hemmer game?
How did I prepare? Well, it was three and a half hours and a prosthetic chair, gluing 15 pieces to my face … so I looked beyond that Star Trek: Enterprise where Aenar are represented. I think in the fourth season I watched those two episodes, dug up as much as I could find about them online Trek of Knowledge. Not much about Aenar. So I felt like I had the free range to build a little. He is an engineer. So I talked to some engineer friends. And you know, I just crossed my thumbs and jumped off the bridge.
As for the character, it starts out a little grumpy, a little rude
[Chuckles] No, he’s right. He’s just right.
What would you say are his defining qualities and what lies behind his bliss?
Well, I think the confidence to know what he knows is what he knows. And may I think that sometimes seems like a little distaste to me. He’s also, you know, I think he’s a little older. So there is experience and wisdom in that. And he was a bit of an outsider all his life, I mean, I think in the Trek story they say there are only 1000 Aenars left in the galaxy. So that feeling of being an outsider, of being alone, and when that happens sometimes, you get a little hard blade.
We know of course that the characters will grow during the season, what can we expect from Hemmer’s character?
Hmm, what can I say? What do I say? I think it’s fair to say that since it’s Star Trek, you’ll see the connection between these characters and how they come together. And there are some good surprises. Stay with us.
And are you Canadian? (I’m from Toronto.)
I am Canadian! I live in Stratford, Ontario. I’m originally from Calgary, Alberta … So you’ll hear my western draw.
I heard the Aenar have a western draw.
They work now.
Last month, Paramount posted a promotional video on social media introducing Hemmer.
