Sony could buy Square Enix for the PlayStation

Obviously, we’re not yet out of the era of mass video game acquisitions and consolidation, and one new rumor is something many fans have been theorizing about for some time, that Sony may want to buy Japan’s Square Enix for the PlayStation brand.

This report comes from the show PS I Love You, where Greg Miller says he heard Sony is trying to buy Square Enix, although it is unclear what stage of the process could happen and whether it will really happen, and he says to take with reserve.

Square Enix was in the news last week after the Embracer Group sold Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and a bunch of IPs like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Thief. Now the theory is that the company is “shrinking” to be a potentially more attractive target of the acquisition.

There’s a long-standing connection between Square Enix and PlayStation because the two companies have collaborated on releases many, many times in the past. The idea behind the acquisition is that Sony might be able to make something like Final Fantasy as an exclusive PlayStation series once and for all. Although after their purchase of Bungie, who knows, because that deal didn’t require Bungie’s only game franchise, Destiny, to become the exclusive property of the PlayStation. Both Destiny and Bungie’s future games remain multiplatform. But would the same be true for Square Enix and its remaining IP addresses? That is unclear.

This report joins previous rumors that it actually is Microsoft who wanted to acquire a large Japanese studio and break into that market. But again, the relationship between Square Enix and Sony seems to be so established that it is unlikely that MS will buy them (although I guess there is always a number). This has led some to speculate about Microsoft’s interest in companies like SEGA or Capcom.

Sony has also had other rumors that it is potentially buying FromSoftware, but this ultimately has no concrete basis for the sources and it turns out that the origin of this latest report is something of a misunderstanding. However, “logically” Sony also has a close relationship with FromSoftware and obviously everyone would want Fromm’s stable game and talents on their list as potential exclusives, which has been proven once again, but Elden Ring who led the way in GOTY.

Basically, what boils down to this is that if you’re not Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, or a big tech company, it’s possible that one of them will buy you. The contract with Activision has proven that anything in the industry is possible. In this case, selling Square Enix to Sony makes more sense than most deals, and we’ll see if what Greg Miller hears really comes true.
