This week was a big competition for a prominent player. Triston McKenzie put himself in a fight with a few brilliant starts, and Franmil Reyes he seems to be getting back on track after a tough start to the season. Ultimately, this week’s prominent player goes in Steven Kwan to achieve the first of his career in the big moments for the Guardians.
Honestly, Kwan could probably have won this award several times because he played so well this season. He played well enough to even earn a Rookie of the American American League award for April.
In Kwan’s last seven games, he hits 0.250 with six RBIs and seven goals. It was his consistency like this that made Kwan such a valuable part of this Guardians lineup so early in the season.
The first big moment of Kwan’s week happened on Wednesday in the second game of the Guardians ’duel against the San Diego Padres. After the Guardians returned in a late game, Kwan approached the board at the bottom of the tenth inning and did what he does best. He swung the ball nicely and lightly, knocking the base kick into the right field allowing it Owen Miller score, and Kwan for his first shot in the aisle!
Looking back on leaving, Kwan He said, “That one didn’t hit very well, but it finds its way and that’s the beauty of baseball.” It’s an example of a guy who doesn’t try to do too much and just pulls the ball into the game.
It was an amazing sight to see him overwhelmed by the Guardian’s dugout. But it was just as great to see the Guardians come away with a big win against a very good NL East team.
Kwan’s second big moment of the week came a day later in the first game of the Guardians ’match against the Toronto Blue Jays. After the Guardians fell 2-0 early, Kwan came into the third inning with Austin Hedges on the base. Kwan took matters into his own hands and made two home run runs to tie the game and help the Guardians come to victory.
This was Kwan’s first home run of his career and there couldn’t have been a better time for the Guardians to get back in the game.
The most impressive thing about Kwan last week, which has been the theme of the season so far, is how tied up and calm he was in the big moments. This was especially evident in Kwan’s approach to the plate during his departure for the bat. Players may need years to feel comfortable in big moments, but not for Kwan.
Kwan’s big career moments during last week’s games are what made him stand out the most for this award. However, other Guardian players are starting to heat up, so be sure to come back next week to see who the prominent player of the week is.
