Hello and welcome to another edition of Box Art Brawl!
Last week we took a look at the SNES classic Super Castlevania IV, and boy, you really didn’t like the Japanese box, did you? The North American variant took a convincing victory with 94% of the vote; one of the most determined Box Art Brawls we may have ever seen! Hey, at least the game itself is rosy brilliant wherever you play it, right?
This week we watch Earthbound – or as it is known in Japan, Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū – a game that had a rather difficult time when it was initially released in the West, but has since gained a significant number of followers. Our own video producer, Zion, quotes Mother like his favorite feature franchise of all time, so that says something!
In this edition of Box Art Brawl we confront North America with Japan, because well … They are the only two regions where the game exists in its original form. Have fun with this, and we wish all moms a happy Mother’s Day (even those who celebrate it on a day other than the second Sunday in May)!
Be sure to cast your votes in the poll below; but first, let’s look at the box designs themselves.
The North American box for Earthbound shows the legendary Final Starman, with the protagonist Ness only visible inside the visor. It’s a colorful, almost psychedelic box with swirling patterns reminiscent of wallpaper during in-game battles, along with a futuristic logo that fits very nicely with Starman.
It is also worth noting, of course, that the box itself was significantly larger than other SNES boxes at the time, thanks to the inclusion of a strategic guide inside.
Okay, let’s not lie, we love the box for Mother 2. It has a beautiful, minimal design that definitely reminds us of Square-Enix The ultimate fantasy series. The red background is recognizable, but the logo itself is what really catches the eye, with the word ‘MOTHER’ almost zooming in behind the large number ‘2’ just below, along with a fantastic planet in place of the letter ‘O’.
We expect this to be pretty close, but be sure to cast your vote and vote through the poll below!
Thanks for voting! See you next time at another round of Box Art Brawl.
