Our first impressions of F1 22 as shown by the impact of EA

The change to the naming convention for this year’s edition of Formula 1 is not the most visual sign that this is the first official F1 title released since EA bought Codemasters.

Although the takeover took place before last year’s release, this year’s F1 22 is the first to have a proper EA impact and this was evident during a presentation led by Lee Mather, F1’s senior creative director, who gave more details about F1 22, including a brand new feature F1 Life.

Although it wasn’t included in the preview version of the game given to The Race, some early screenshots showed options for customizing your driver outside the context of the race.

So you can earn T-shirts, pants, sneakers, sunglasses and hats, as well as furniture for the living space around which is the thematic mode of F1 Life. The best comparison of racing games would be Test Drive Unlimited 2, which had a similar set of customization options.

The purpose of F1 Life is to act as a multiplayer center between races. It will also be a place to show off the supercars you have unlocked.

McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Aston Martin will have in-game road car models that will be able to drive. Which cars in particular have not yet been officially revealed, although the McLaren 720s briefly appeared at the end of the game’s Miami trailer, and McLaren Arthur was shown during the unveiling. In addition, both safety cars will be driven.

In many ways, supercars act as a replacement for classic F1 cars that did not survive the transition from F1 2020 to F1 2021. This is because events that use these cars will be integrated into career mode in a similar way as inviting events with classic cars are were in F1 2020.

The weather attack, checkpoint challenge and chase events are returning from F1 2020, but now feature supercars instead of old F1 cars. In addition to these events are autocross, drift, average speed zone and rival duel. Supercars and two safety cars will also be available for chronometer driving, but there is no word that they could be used in more conventional Grand Prix mode races.

While we haven’t been able to try that side of the game so far, there are many new features we could see in action in the F1 22 preview version.

Visually the most interesting of these are the new transmission and interactive options for formation circles, safety car periods and boxing stops.

When a broadcast option is selected, the game takes control of the player and displays the action, usually from the cameras on the track. For the formation circle, it shows you an abbreviated version of it while showing the TV tower graphics of all the starting tires and expected race strategies – deliberately similar to the way real-life TV broadcasts are shown.

The safety car broadcast option has more practical benefits as it reduces the amount of time spent waiting to return to the race. Once you catch up with the back of the safety car train, you’ll get several shots of different drivers on the train, and in one case you’ll get a graphic showing which driver was allegedly the championship leader and where they ran on the track before you regain control of your car just before making the safety car return to the pits.

During these broadcast-style sections, you’ll get a few lines of comments to add a sense of watching the race unfold. These could be David Croft or, new to F1 22, Alex Jacques, with players who can choose who will be the commentator.

Others who will give their vote for F1 for the first time include Natalie Pinkham, and for other territories there will be Jacques Villeneuve, Jean-Eric Vergne and Sascha Roos. Longtime race engineer Jeff was replaced in this year’s game by former McLaren mechanic who became host Marc Priestley.

Transmission compartments are optional and you can opt for interactive versions of formation circles, boxing stops and safety car periods instead. A requirement to park manually in your network slot has been added to formation circles this year.

If this is done wrong, the game will return your car to the correct position, but you can use this extra freedom to your advantage by parking at a certain angle to try to cover up your opponent in the beginning.

The amount of additional interaction to stop in boxing is minimal as in either option players will still have to slow down in time and apply a speed limiter on pitlane and then deactivate it again after leaving boxing.

To some extent, boxing stops have had a degree of interactivity in the previous few F1 games because you have to increase the number of revolutions and accelerate beyond your stop. New for the F1 22, however, must have time to turn into its own box, which is achieved at the touch of a button. How well you spend your time affects the speed of your boxing stop, with the potential to see the boxing team struggling to change tires or the front wing.

During the presentation, Mather revealed that the boxing team will be able to upgrade in the ways of the driver’s career and my team career.

Other changes to the mode include the addition of a new exercise program called the AR heat chart. From what has been shown, it seems to be designed to teach players the racing line around each lap, given that you score based on how firmly you hold the ideal line around each corner.

The department’s events have been reworked and there will be some scenarios that can have short-term and long-term effects. One example cited was a problem with team facilities, which can be ignored, but means that fixing in the future will cost more than dealing with the problem right away.

Another minor change that is relevant to the way my team career works, as well as multiplayer, is that there are four different colors for your car’s livery. They are glossy, satin, matte and metallic.

Sprint races have been added to career mode for the respective Grand Prix, but players can choose the sprint race format for the weekend on any track in Grand Prix mode.

As expected, the handling of the cars has been redesigned with an updated tire model and suspension physics designed to accurately replicate the new, heavier generation F1 car. What was obvious from The Race’s hands-on experience with the game is that you have to be much more sensitive to gas than in the F1 2021 because it’s much easier to turn in low gear without modulating the gas pressure.

Anyone hoping for a continuation of the F1 2021 Braking Point fashion story in this game will be disappointed as it will not be included in F1 22. The reason given by Mather is that it is a two year development cycle to add to the story, hence the lack of one in F1 2020 despite a short F2 story in F1 2019 and then Braking Point in F1 2021. That means there’s a chance we’ll see a whole new way of storytelling in F1 next year, but one definitely won’t be included in this year’s edition.

With the full release of the game in less than two months, it shouldn’t be long before more details about F1 22 are revealed. This will include F1 icon drivers, seven of whom are included in F1 2021, while more are promised. will be added for F1 22.
