Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets won the NBA MVP award for the second season in a row, according to the report

Nikola Jokić won the NBA MVP award for the 2021-22 season, taking over the biggest individual part of the league for the second year in a row according to ESPN. Jokic’s successive MVP awards coincide with the feat achieved by his fellow finalist Giannis Antetokounmpo during the 2018-19 and ’19 -20 seasons. The third finalist, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid, never won the award.

In addition to assists, Jokic managed to improve his averages per game in all major statistical categories in the regular season. He ended his career with the highest points (27.1), rebounds (13.8), blocks (0.9) and stolen balls (1.5) per game. He also set a career record with 58.3 percent of his goals from the game, and although he didn’t score a high career level in free throws or a 3-point percentage, he scored the most in total free throws (379) and three-pointers (97) made.

The race between Jokić, Embiid and Antetokounmp was fierce. Embiid won the scoring title with an average of 30.6 points. The Milwaukee Bucks of Antetokounmpa finished with the biggest holder of three, finishing third in the Eastern Conference 51-31. Embiid’s 76ers had the same record, but finished fourth in the tie. Jokic’s Nuggets were the 6th seed in the West despite winning just three games less, and were knocked out in the first round by the Golden State Warriors.

All three MVP finalists had to overcome significant adversity to bring their teams where they are. Embiid played the first half of the season without Ben Simmons, who was sitting due to an exchange request, and Antetokounmpo had to play out of center position due to an injury sustained by Brook Lopez. But Lopez eventually returned, and the 76ers replaced Simmons with James Harden. Jokic did not receive such relief. Star teammate Jamal Murray has not played a single game this season, and 3rd option Michael Porter Jr. he played only nine games. Jokic’s team may have had a worse result than the other two, but his ability to keep the Nuggets afloat without their second and third best players probably brought him this trophy.

Jokic is the 15th player to win multiple MVP awards, joined by Bob Pettit, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Antetokounmpo. He is the only Nugget to win an NBA MVP award, although Spencer Haywood won an ABA MVP award when the team was still known as the Denver Rockets.

With Murray and Porter injured, Denver never had a realistic chance of winning the championship this season, but Jokic managed to take them to the playoffs in a way that no other player probably could. He is not a traditional MVP in style or rankings, but voters have spoken out and determined that he was the most valuable player of the 2021-22 NBA season.
