I tried Diet Coke with coffee cream, a popular drink in Utah, and would consider ordering it instead of coffee at a restaurant

  • I live in the United Kingdom and usually start the day with a homemade or purchased cup of coffee.

  • As I flipped through TikTok, I discovered that mixing coffee cream with diet Coca-Cola was common in Utah.

  • I tried it for the first time and I was a big fan of how it balances sweet and spicy flavors.

Like many others, I tend to start the day with a cup of coffee.

I’ve spent most of my life living in the UK, but I’m pretty sure starting the day with a cup of coffee is a standard routine in most places around the world.

Whenever I’m at home, I stick to making coffee at a coffee shop – although, when I’m in the mood to treat myself, I jump out to grab a cappuccino at my local coffee shop.

As I flipped through TikTok, I saw a user find it popular in Utah to mix coffee cream with diet Coke.

Until recently, I had no idea how popular diet Coca-Cola blends are in Utah. As I flipped through TikTok, I came across a video by @toponlinefinds, which has over 2.4 million followers, who responded to a comment by someone confused that she put coffee cream in her diet cola in another video she posted on January 20th. .

“People were so confused, and it shocked me,” says the user, who doesn’t use her name on TikTok, in a post posted on Jan. 28 that has garnered over 627,000 views since then. “If you’re from Utah or you’ve visited Utah, it’s as common there as drinking water.” Insider’s request for comment was not immediately answered.

As someone who is not from Utah, I was curious to find out more.

Utah has a large Mormon population. While coffee is banned in religion, caffeinated carbonated beverages are not.

According to the World Population Review, nearly 70% of people in Utah identify as Mormons, which explains why there may be fewer coffee drinkers there because it is forbidden in religion.

According to the BBC, carbonated drinks became allowed after the church changed its position on banning cold caffeinated beverages in 2012. As of today, hot drinks with caffeine are still banned.

In the years that followed, “dirty soda” outlets appeared in Utah. Those stores, once called the “Mormon Starbucks” by the New York Times, sell carbonated juice spiced with flavored syrups, the Insider reported earlier.

The TikTok recipe from @toplinefinds is simple, although some ingredients were hard to find at my local store in the UK.

The recipe shared by @toponlinefinds includes:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find gravel ice or Coffee Mate liquid coconut cream at my local store. Luckily, I had previously visited the American Food Store in London where I bought French coffee cream vanilla powder from Coffee Mate so in the end I settled for that and plain ice cubes.

I started by turning my French Vanilla Coffee Mate cream into a liquid.

If you are based in the U.S. or have liquid cream at home, feel free to skip this step.

To turn the French vanilla coffee cream powder into a liquid, all I had to do was pour equal parts of boiling water into the powder. In the TikTok video, the user doesn’t seem to pour a lot of cream, but to be sure, I ended up using one quarter cup of powder and one quarter cup of boiling water.

After making sure the powder dissolved, I let the hot liquid cool for 15 minutes.

As I mixed the powder in the boiling water, I felt a hint of French vanilla, which was just heaven.

After it melted enough, I let it cool for about 15 minutes so it wouldn’t melt the ice right away as I poured it with the diet coke.

Then I filled a glass with ice and poured diet cola.

After the coffee cream had cooled enough, I started by adding ice cubes to a tall glass and infused it with diet cola. To be honest, I’m a regular Coca Cola fan, but I stuck to the viral recipe to express my true opinion.

I definitely think gravel ice would give this a much more professional feel, but at the end of the day, ice is ice.

Next I added cream and a little fresh lime juice.

According to a TikTok user, fresh lime is a must, so forget to use the pre-squeezed lime juice you have in the fridge.

To add a little spice, I put a slice of lime in the drink.

Although I didn’t have pebble ice, I wanted to add a little elegance to my version of this drink by slicing lime slices.

The final product looked like an ice latte – without a slice of lime.

Then it was from the bottom up. And honestly, I was a fan.

A complete revelation, I’m a little sweet so even though I’ve never drunk this drink before, I doubted I would be a fan. And I was – he was cute, but not overly so. If nothing else, it reminded me a little of Vanilla Cola, except with the mixed flavor of squeezed lime.

I enjoyed the combination so much that I eventually interrupted my boyfriend while he was working to give him a sip. Like me, his response was, “I’m a fan.”

Although I don’t think I’ll be making this at home anymore, if I saw this drink on the restaurant menu, I’ll probably order it.

Although I really enjoyed this beverage, I probably won’t replace my daily cup of coffee. My main reason is that I know that there is some scientific research that suggests that this is not the healthiest choice of drink, and it has been linked to causing tooth decay and kidney damage after long-term consumption.

In addition, I am a big proponent of a moderate way of thinking about everything. If diet car (or just plain car) and cream cream are caught in the UK, I would definitely not say no to ordering at a restaurant.
