Here’s where the masks in the Chicago area are advised and who should wear them – NBC Chicago

Multiple COVID indicators have risen over the past week, leading the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand the number of counties where precautionary measures are proposed.

According to an update to the CDC community level map by county, 12% of U.S. counties were listed as medium or high community levels, an increase from 9% last week.

Several Illinois counties also made the list, prompting some local governments to issue reminders and special guidelines for the mask along with recommendations already made by the CDC.

In Chicago, health officials “strongly recommend” residents to wear masks as the city has recently moved from a low to mid-level community due to the growing number of COVID cases.

While Chicago remains at the middle level of the community, health officials said that if the city moved to a higher category, the mask’s mandate could be restored.

Health officials in the suburbs of Cook County have issued similar guidelines following a change in status at the community level.

Masks are recommended indoors to protect people at high risk of serious illness, those with basic health conditions and the immunocompromised, according to a press release issued by county health officials.

Recommendations vary slightly in Kane, McHenry, Lake, DuPage, DeKalb, Kendall and Will counties, which are also listed in the middle category. As these counties have yet to issue special guidelines for masks, residents and visitors are encouraged to follow the recommendations set by state health officials and the CDC.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, those in areas with an increase in COVID-19 infection are advised to wear a mask if they enter enclosed spaces with other people present.

The CDC’s recommendations, however, differ.

The Agency does not require or recommend masks for the general population at the middle community level. Instead, people at high risk for the disease are advised to talk to their doctor to determine if they should wear a mask. Masks are encouraged when the county is raised to a high level of community, the guidelines say.
