Don’t worry about it – April was a brutal month for Cleveland Franmil Reyes.
But since the calendar was moved to May, Reyes seems to have found something that made a big difference to him and he suddenly looks a lot more confident.
It wasn’t that long ago that the Guardians ’cleaner was stuck in a 0-for-25 drop with (a sip) of 17 throws. He finished the month scoring just 0.135 (10-for-74) with two Homers and no other extra hits from base. He scored 35 times a month which was ultimately the most unproductive month of his Major League career.
But May was a much different story.
Reyes kicked off his third home run of the season on Saturday night. The ball landed on the home run porch and flew off the bat at a speed of almost 111 mph, marking his hardest hit ball of the season.
In his first five games this month, Reyes scored .474 (9-for-19) with .524 percent on base and 1,155 OPS. He also does a better job of catching on top of the ball – his home run on Saturday night is the only ball he has hit all month.
He has also hit a higher percentage of balls in the opposite direction (right field) so far in May, which is a promising sign. Earlier in the year he mentioned that he was working on trying to get the ball a little deeper into the zone before contact, and hitting from the opposite field seems to be proof of that mentality.
Terry Francona lowered Reyes even to the sixth to try to reduce the pressure from him. Maybe that helped a little too.
Cleveland opened Sunday’s home final against Toronto 3.5 games behind Minnesota, which they will see next weekend for the first time this season. If the Guardians are to be competitors at AL Central, it is certain that Reyes should be an impressive bat in their daily line-up.
