eminem has as strong a hit as any heavy metal band – at least that’s what the guy who runs Rock & Roll HOF says … which doesn’t go so well.
Greg Harris – That is what the executive director of the Hall said this week in an interview with Boldness … where he discussed the many recipients who will be included in this year’s ceremony – including, of course, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon and Slim Shady, among others.
During the conversation, Harris sang all the praises – including The priest of Judahwho were also recruited after being convicted twice before – but especially for Mr. Mathers … whose music he called “as difficult and steady as any metal song.”
Harris said Em would be the 10th hip-hop artist to be admitted to the hall – he was the first Grandmaster Flash and Angry five in ’07 – adding that Slim has been an integral part of the hall for some time … helping with induction Run-DMC and LL Cool J..
Indeed, Em helped celebrate hip-hop performances on the big stage … and he is definitely deserving, even in his first year of eligibility. Still, here’s the problem, at least in some people’s minds – Harris seems to downplay the impact / importance of metals.
Whether Eminem’s music actually matches the energy of a traditional metal song / performance is debated … but what some die-hard people hear in his remarks is disrespect for the genre.
Some argue that this is further proven by the fact that Judas Priest is only now getting its flowers … even though they have been entitled to induction for more than 20 years.
Frontman Rob Halford recently he shouted the importance of JP entering, albeit late, and what that means for metal bands everywhere … or even legendary hard rock bands in general, several of which were also introduced after years of voting failures … or yet to be recognized at all, such as Motorhead or Iron Maiden for example.
Does Eminem’s music hit harder than Judas Priest ???
Meanwhile, it seems – at least to some, anyway – that Hall voters want to introduce certain artists right away … which makes it more like a popularity contest than anything else.
Anyway, to get back to the question at hand – is Eminem actually as heavy as Priest ??? 🎵
