Elizabeth Olsen is tired of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola hitting on Marvel movies. The actress, who returned to theaters as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” told the Independent that she is frustrated when people make Marvel movies “look like a minor art form.”
“I’m not saying we’re making indie art films, but I just think it’s taking away from our team, which bothers me,” Olsen said. “These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, cameramen – I feel diminished by this kind of criticism that takes away from all the people who make award-winning films, who also work on these projects.”
“From an acting point of view, however, I understand; I fully understand that a different kind of performance is happening. But I think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away hundreds of very talented people from the team, ”Olsen added. “I’m getting a little angry there about that.”
Scorsese infamously compared Marvel movies to rides in theme parks as he discussed how superhero movies have reshaped exhibitions in a way that is detrimental to non-superhero movies. Coppola was quoted in 2019 as calling Marvel films “despised”, although he later clarified that he was not talking specifically about Marvel films, but commented on how the film industry now values commerce instead of art. However, Coppola overshadowed Marvel films in a February interview with GQ magazine.
“There used to be studio films,” Coppola said. “It simply came to our notice then. And what is a Marvel image? The Marvel image is a prototype of a film that is shot over and over and over and over again to look different. ”
Nicolas Cage defended Marvel movies in the footsteps of his Uncle Francis who beat them. “Yeah, why are they doing this?” Cage asked GQ about filmmakers criticizing Marvel. “I do not understand the conflict. I do not agree with them in that perception or opinion. “
“I don’t think the movies I’m making, like ‘Pig’ or ‘Joe,’ are in any way in conflict with Marvel movies,” Cage said. to a movie with a budget of $ 30 to $ 50 million.I think the movies are in good condition. If you watch ‘Power of the Dog’, or if you watch ‘Spencer’, or any of Megan Ellison’s movies.I think there is still Paul Thomas Anderson. ”
