‘Doctor Strange 2’ brings the biggest ticket sales in 2022

Walt Disney Co. announced on Sunday that the film “Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness” grossed about $ 185 million from ticket sales during its first weekend in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, making it the biggest opener of the year.

The film overshadowed “The Batman,” which grossed $ 134 million, as the greatest film of 2022. The second “Doctor Strange” was also the second largest film since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, behind just “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which earned $ 260.1 million.

“This is a complete victory for an industry that has been almost non-existent for the last two summers,” said Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Marvel has been starting summers for over a decade. This is a return to normal.”

It is estimated that the film surpassed the first film “Doctor Strange”, which was launched in 2016, by about $ 100 million.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation “The Bad Guys” took second place with an estimated $ 9.8 million in their third weekend, and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” took third place with $ 6.2 million.

The new “Doctor Strange” is doing even better internationally with an estimated $ 265 million since opening Wednesday.

The film is shown in 4,534 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, making it the seventh widest opening ever to Disney. IMAX, 3D and other premium format options accounted for 36% of the total box office.
