The latest feature of Digital Wellbeing that will soon be available on Android 13 devices is the ability for sleep mode to darken your background.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of the app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we can see different lines of code within that hint of possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not deliver these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. However, we will try to allow those who are closer to the end to show you what it will look like in case of sending. With that in mind, read on.
Sleep mode: dark theme and dim background
Today, Google has provided a full suite of features on Android that will help you discourage the use of your phone at night or at the very least make night use less stressful for the eyes. With sleep mode, much of Google’s Digital Wellbeing suite, you can already use the schedule to set up your phone in grayscale, disable Always-On Display, and activate Do Not Disturb.
In Android 13, we discovered that Google is working on the ability to dim the background of your phone. This feature briefly became public in a change to the Android code we noticed a few months ago before it was removed, and our Dylan Roussel managed to enable it on an Android 13 Beta device. Below are a few examples of dimmed backgrounds, ranging from 0% (disabled) to 100% (completely black).
With the latest beta update for Digital Wellbeing, we find the first hints on how the background dimming effect will be used in Android 13.
Darken the background
Specifically, background dimming will come as an additional new feature of Digital Wellbeing’s sleep mode as one of many ways to dim the screen at night to make it easier on the eyes. At this point, we’re not sure what percentage of your Android 13 wallpaper will be dimmed.

Keep the screen dark, darken the background and more
In an alternate piece of text in the app that is likely to show up on devices not yet running Android 13, we learn that sleep mode will also be able to make your device “use a dark background”. Based on the second part of the text, it seems that this only refers to the inclusion of the built-in dark mode of Android.

Use a black background
As of today, although Android offers ways to schedule dark themes based on sunset and sunrise – and we’ve seen signs of sleep-based scheduling in Android 13 – these new sleep mode options don’t seem to be active on our Android devices yet. 13 Beta.
