Dead by Daylight Devs about David King, LGBT + chapters and delivery characters

Dead by Daylight’s The diverse killer and Survivors cast recently got their first LGBT + character when it was confirmed that the rude and naughty David King is gay. This discovery is shared in the latest Tome from Game Archive mode, a feature that provides little things and rewards for completing challenges. Since this is the first inclusion of LGBT + in the game, Dead from daylight developer Behavior Interactive has given this announcement its special news page, also, for those who are not frequent visitors to the Archive.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Dead from daylight Creative director Dave Richard said the studio has worked with GaymerX to determine two things: is there “a good fit for the LGBTQ narrative,” Richard said, and is the community and developers ready for that kind of story. Partly based on GaymerX analysis, Behavior determined that David King would be a candidate for this initiative.

Dead from daylight has been active in the LGBT + community for some time, both in terms of in-game add-ons and in terms of supporting creators of various content, so why now was the right time for the LGBT + narrative? Richard told us that near the beginning Dead from daylight, Survivor was supposed to be a “shell character” supplemented with context clips so players could shape their own stories. As the game evolved with the Archive and more characters were added, relationships naturally began to appear in the background stories of the characters. The killer known as the Nurse had a husband, for example, and Ace Visconti was framed as sleek ladies, but LGBT + stories were not in those biographies. Richard said the community pointed to this inconsistency which led developers to look for ways to correct the omission.

“And so our LGBTQ community told us,‘ Well, you have this, so don’t follow your rule, ’” Richard said. “And we said, ‘You’re right. You’re absolutely right.’ So let’s make sure we do that. All right, let’s take the time to develop the right angle and the right story so we have a great story that won’t be symbolic. And I see that for David King’s narration. “

But David is not a new character and has not always described him as “gay” – at least not as far as the tradition of Fr. Dead from daylight is worried. In Memory 342 of another Tome game, David’s ex-girlfriend is even mentioned. That doesn’t contradict or undo Behaviour’s recent announcement, but so far, that’s all the players knew about David in terms of his sexuality.

Retroactive announcements like this are sometimes criticized by those who would like to create a new character rather than reconnect the existing one. Richard said the LGBT + narrative in the new chapter is being considered – and is still being planned for the future – but that this retroactive discovery has been decided with speed in mind.

“Definitely creating an entire chapter around the LGBTQ narrative was and still is part of our plan for the future,” Richard said. “But we wanted to make sure this content was in the hands of our player as soon as possible. And running a chapter, especially when, say, it’s outside our comfort zone, takes time, a lot more time. And we’re planning a chapter well in advance. So we didn’t so agile. So we should wait even longer. That’s why we decided to do it retroactively. That’s one of the reasons. “

Even before this revelation about David, sections of the community made their conclusions, or at least expressed their wishes, about that Survivor and others through fanart and sending different characters to each other. If you are reviewing any trend Dead from daylight topic on social media, there’s a good chance you’ll run into some of David King x Dwight Fairfield’s ships. Richard did not go into every specific factor in the decision to select David for this LGBT + post, but said the sense of community, including those ships, definitely played a role.

“Of course. Yes, it was important in David’s choice,” Richard said when asked if he had seen all the fanart and if Behavior weighed such things. “David is a popular character. He is loved by a lot of different players, regardless of background, but he is definitely a favorite in LGBTQ boats with Dwight. So it was definitely weighed.”

So, as this announcement sets a precedent for future Tomeses and expansion Dead by Daylight’s knowledge? Does every Survivor or Assassin from now on need his great discovery as well as David’s? Richard doesn’t believe it.

“No, definitely not. It’s not something we’re going to start doing, like a biography statistic that says their exact age, their exact sexuality and the like,” Richard said. “We don’t do that. We leave a lot to the interpretation of our players. And it also helps when they identify with those characters to leave some elements to the interpretation of our players.”

Those who want to learn more about David King can play through Volume 11 which is currently available at Dead from daylight and also shares insights into stories about The Twins and The Observer. The behavior also has a charm of pride in the game that can now be exploited with a special code.
