Tesla Inc. based in Texas is among the small but growing number of U.S. companies offering travel expenses coverage for employees who have to cross state borders for medical care, including abortion.
Companies are offering these benefits as the landscape of state and federal abortion policies in America changes. Texas enforced the strictest abortion law last November when it banned abortion after six weeks of pregnancy and instructed citizens to enforce the rule. Other states, including Idaho, Florida and Oklahoma, have passed laws in recent months to tighten access to the process.
Earlier this week, a leaked draft Supreme Court opinion indicated that the court may be preparing to overturn Roe v. Wade, a 1973 precedent that established the constitutional right to abortion.
The 67-page draft, first reported by Politico on Monday, said Roe was “extremely wrong and deeply damaging”.
Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement Tuesday that the draft, written in February, is not necessarily a final solution in the case. The court is expected to issue its opinion by the end of June or early July.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, it would open the door to stronger state restrictions, including a ban on proceedings.
Companies that offer assistance to employees to travel for abortion may be on a secure legal basis at the moment, but that could change.
The Texas Abortion Act extends responsibility to abortion clinics and doctors, as well as those who help abortion. Oklahoma and Idaho have passed similar laws. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt passed a law this week, and Idaho law was temporarily blocked in court. Meanwhile, some lawmakers rejected the company’s new policies.

Tesla, TSLA -0.87% ▼ which last October announced the relocation of its Austin, Texas headquarters, said in its 2021 Impact Report that the company has an expanded “health insurance offering that includes travel and accommodation support for those who may need to seek health services that are not available in their home country. ” Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.
Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. told employees it would reimburse up to $ 4,000 a year for travel expenses for medical treatments, including abortions, which employees cannot access within 160 miles of their homes.

Citigroup Inc., in a power of attorney for its shareholders’ meeting in April, said it has been offering travel benefits to employees seeking resources due to changes in reproductive health laws since this year. More than 10,000 full-time and part-time Citi employees live in Texas.
Yelp Inc., based in San Francisco, offers employees and their dependents financial assistance through insurance if they need to travel outside the state to care for abortion. Yelp’s health insurance YELP -4.34% ▼ currently covers abortion care.
Technology giant Apple Inc., which is expanding its presence in Austin with a new campus of $ 1 billion and 3 million square feet, also said its health insurance policies cover abortion services and travel benefits if needed.
The California company Levi Strauss & Co. she said she would reimburse medical travel expenses to full-time and part-time employees.

Match Group Inc., the parent company of dating apps such as Tinder, OkCupid and Hinge, and dating app company Bumble Inc. last year they created funds to help employees who have to travel outside of Texas to have an abortion. Both companies are headquartered in Texas.
