Big male Crimson Tide basketball player Keith Askins was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Former prominent Alabama basketball player Keith Askins has been inducted into the Alabama 2022 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, along with Alabama softball head coach Patrick Murphytwo of the eight candidates for this year’s Hall of Fame.

Askins’ career in Alabama (1987-90)

  • He was a four-year winner of a letter from Crimson Tide
  • He helped lead Alabama to three SEC tournament titles and two appearances in Sweet 16
  • He led the team in goals scored by three points (51) and attempts (140) during the 1989-90 season.
  • He is still among the top 10 of all time in Alabama in the percentage of threes from the game (7th) and games played (10).th)

Askins NBA career (1990-99)

  • He played all nine seasons of his NBA career in Miami, and in 1990 signed with Heat as a free agent without a draft.
  • He competed as a reserve and defense specialist
  • He won the Heat Leadership Award for a consecutive season (1994-95, 1995-96) and was the team captain for four consecutive seasons (1995-99).
  • He retired in 1999 with 1,852 points and 1,428 rebounds
  • He is still Miami’s all-time leader in games (5th), offensive rebounds (13th), three-point goals (15th) and attempts (15th), total rebounds (15th), stolen balls (17th), blocked shots (17th), defensive rebounds (19th) and minutes played (19th)
  • After retiring, he signed for the position of assistant coach and scout on the NBA team
  • While on the staff, Heat won three NBA Championships (2006, 2012 and 2013)
  • He currently serves as Director of College and Pro Scouting for the Heat

Hall of Fame class

  • Askins and Murphy joined Philip Rivers, Justin Tuck, Rusty Greer, Jake Peavy Doyle Alexander and William Andrews as the 2022 Hall of Fame class.
  • 54th The annual introductory banquet and ceremony were held at the Birmingham Ballroom at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel
  • Since recognizing its first class in 1969, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame has recognized 385 attendees, including this year’s class
