Benedict Cumberbatch appeared for the second time tonight as host SNLalluding in his introductory monologue to his new film Dr. Strange in the multiverse of madnesswhich arrived in U.S. theaters on Friday.
“I am thrilled to be the host again Saturday night live. It was a really fun, great week. I have to be honest because most of the sketch writers this week were giving me sketches every day, and most were about Dr. StrangeSaid Cumberbatch above. “It is great. I love that guy. I love playing a character. The movie is going really well, but me have was in other movies. ”
Cumberbatch joked that he had gone so far as to express it SNLis Lorne Michaels, and Michaels replies, “Like what?”
“I said,‘ Well, The power of the dog, for example ‘, and he said,’ Nobody saw it. ‘ I said, ‘Come on, man. I was nominated for an Oscar for that. I did well ‘, the host recalled. “I mean, I didn’t win. I was beaten by Will Smith… No, not physically. ”
After alluding to the infamous slap at the Oscars, Cumberbatch turned to discuss his excitement of being able to host SNLMother’s Day show. “Of course, I want to wish my mother a very happy Mother’s Day,” he said. “She is currently on holiday in Greece SNL offered her to bring her here first class, and she said, ‘No, I am on a beach in Greece. Are you normal? ‘”
Cumberbatch then told his mother that he loved her, noting that when he was younger, he and his mom had “these weird, funny names” by which they were called. “I called her ‘Pookie,'” he said, “and she called me ‘Benedict Cumberbatch.’
He later joked: “I went to a boarding school outside London – you may have heard of him – called Hogwarts.”
While he was there, his mother would write him “these amazing letters” full of beautiful illustrations. “I can’t do that for her here, obviously,” Cumberbatch remarked, “but I thought I’d use a little of this monologue to thank her for everything she did for me.”
When sentimental piano music began to play, Cumberbatch addressed his mother directly. “Hey, Mom. That is me, your son – little Benedict “, he said. “Thank you for always being there for me.”
Cumberbatch shared that growing up, whenever he had a problem, his mother had a solution. “For example, when I lost two front teeth, I was worried he was going to tease me, but you said,‘ It’s okay. Just try to smile without opening your mouth, ‘he recalled. “That’s great advice, but it also explains why to this day, in every photo on the red carpet, I laugh like this.”
Cut out a photo of Cumberbatch where his smile is a more strange grimace.
“Mom, seriously, thank you,” he said. “You have shown me so much love and support, every step of the way. I love you, Pookie. ”
Tonight, Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie, who was in the audience on the show, also received shouts. “I am seriously in constant, constant awe of you. I mean, for a start, you gave birth to our three beautiful boys, and it’s just a little miracle that every woman will tell you, “he said. “In the meantime, according to you, I was dressed like a wizard – even though he’s a technical wizard.”
After explaining that wizards have dresses – unlike his Marvel character Dr. Strange, who has a cloak – he continued to hope that when his wife really thinks about it, she will realize that their contribution as a parent will equalize. “Because if you think it’s hard to be a mom, try to do it,” he said, turning his wrists. “Yes, I just opened the portal. Please.”
