ASC is preparing for free Art Night on The Block activities

Visitors are invited to the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas (ASC) for an evening of arts and practical activities from 5pm to 7pm on 12 May.

Art Night on The Block is a free event that welcomes the latest ASC artists to exhibit and showcases their latest collaboration between local schools and resident artists. The event also encourages visitors of all ages to explore art and science, the statement said.

RECEPTION

At the ASC’s main building, 701 S. Main St., visitors can attend a reception and meet artists Tammy Harrington and Rashawn Penister.

“In Between” combines Harrington’s sensibility as a graphic artist with Chinese folk art of paper-cutting, exploring how others perceive her cultural identity, “the statement said.

Her exhibition will be on display from May 5 to July 30.

“Penister’s‘ Life is a Card Game ’involves playing cards in his colorful portraits of mixed media to illustrate how we metaphorically play card games by making life choices,” the publication said.

His exhibition can be viewed from May 12 to June 25.

Both exhibitions are sponsored by Simmons Bank. The sponsor of the reception is Art Krewe and MK Distributors.

Visitors can take their photo in ASC’s photo booth and help paint an interior mural to be on display to celebrate the 2022 theater season.

STUDENT ARTISTS

At ASC’s The ARTSpace on Main facility, 623 S. Main St., the new exhibition will feature a joint art project created by students at Pine Bluff High School, Dollar-way High School and Robert More-head High School.

ASC resident artists Aida Ayers, Elly Bates and Brie Boyce worked with these students to create collage quilts. Students teamed up to explore significant events and figures from the Pine Bluff area and Jefferson County. They then drew portraits depicting them, transferred them to fabric and joined the pieces together.

In addition to student quilts, colorful Ayers quilts will also be on display. The quilt exhibition will be on view from May 10 to July 1.

The youth exhibition was partially supported by a donation of Arts in Education from the Arkansas Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Pine Bluff Sand & Gravel Company is also sponsoring this event.

Also during Art Night, visitors can participate in science experiments, play games and learn about ASC summer camps. For details: ASC, (870) 536-3375 or visit asc701.org.
